COVID-19 PROPERTY TAX RELIEF PROGRAM FOR THE TOWN OF COLEBROOK
On April 23, 2020, the Town of Colebrook adopted the Lower Interest Program for all Colebrook taxpayers:
Executive Order 7S issued by Governor Lamont on April 1, 2020 provided relief for taxpayers through a local option low interest program.
This program allows the Town of Colebrook to offer a lower interest rate for real estate property, personal property and motor vehicle tax bills that become due on July 1, 2020 for three months from the date that they become due and payable.
The effect of this program is that any taxpayer that pays their July installment amount due after August 3, 2020 will be charged 0.25% per month interest from the original due date instead of the statutory 1.5% per month. The last day to take advantage of this lower interest will be October 2, 2020. Any July installment amount due remaining unpaid as of October 2, 2020, interest will be charged back to July 1, 2020 at 1.5% per month of RE, PP, etc.
ESCROW PAYMENTS:
According to the Governor’s EO 7S/7W , Financial institutions and mortgage servicers that hold property tax payments in escrow on behalf of a borrower shall continue to remit property taxes to the Town of Colebrook so long as the borrower remains current on their mortgage or is in a forbearance or deferment program, irrespective of the borrower’s eligibility for or participation in the Deferment Program or the Low Interest Rate Program.
