We are now in the home stretch of preparations for the 81st annual Colebrook Labor Day Fair on Saturday, September 5th.

This year’s Fair will include: our iconic frog jumping contest and pet show; classic cars on display in the area adjacent to the Ballfield; the always exciting Cardboard Boat Regatta; more than 30 vendors on the Green; a wide variety of food options; and the ever-popular Community & Senior Center Gift Basket Raffle.

To volunteer to work a shift at the Fair, please contact Karen Odell at kodell@colebrooktownhall.org or use the following Community & Senior Center Sign-Up Genius link: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090A49A8A928AAFD0-64718002-thecolebrook.

If you’d like to build a boat and set sail for the Cardboard Boat Regatta, taking place at 3:30 p.m. at the Town Pond on Fair Day, there’s still time to do so. Materials (3 large sheets of cardboard and 2 rolls of duct tape) are available for $10 at Town Hall. Additional cardboard is also available for $5 a sheet. Prizes will be awarded for “Funky-est” boat and best costume. Learn how to build a cardboard boat here.

During the Fair, you can visit the only Colonial Era schoolhouse in Connecticut that has not been modernized in any way. On September 5th, the historic Rock School House will be open, and a free shuttle bus will run from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. from Town Hall to the School, and back.

The Colebrook Recreation Cow Plop Raffle, sponsored by Pinney Stables, will be held from 1-3 p.m. during the Fair at the Colebrook Ball Field on Cooper Lane. Tickets can be purchased at Facebook.com/colebrookctfair, or from Karen at Town Hall. Tickets are $20 with a cash prize of 20% of total ticket sales. Proceeds benefit Colebrook Recreation programs.

With the support of the Colebrook Fire Department, the Board of Selectmen and Colebrook Consolidated School are collaborating on a dunk tank fundraiser in the area behind Town Hall, and next to the 4th Grade class Lemonade Stand. Funds raised will support the school’s annual Nature’s Classroom trip. Hours are 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

To accommodate our Fair guests, we will be temporarily re-locating the Town Hall composting station. Between September 4th and September 8th, the food scap collection  bin will be located at the southwest corner of the Colebrook Town Garage. On Tuesday, September 8th, it will return to Town Hall.

Crack sealing will continue through next week. Roads being treated include: Beech Hill Rd.; Shantry Rd.; Bunnell St.; Bunnell St. Ext.; Smith Hill Rd.; Phelps Rd.; Pine Rd.; and Old Colebrook Rd.

The 2026/27 academic year kicked off yesterday at Colebrook Consolidated School with our annual First Day ceremony. Parents and community members gathered to wish our K-6 students well, and heard updates from Principal Will Wesley, Superintendent Bob Gilbert, PTO President Colette Hiller and Rec Board Chair Kim DeMarco.

We have a new face at Town Hall. With Cathie Norton recently taking over as Assessor, thus vacating her role as Assistant Town Clerk, Colebrook resident Jane McAndrew is training in the Town Clerk’s office with Debi McKeon and will assume this part-time role.

A plaque honoring the late Justine Trowbridge was recently installed in the second-floor meeting room of Town Hall (adjacent to the double doors). The memorial, first proposed by former First Selectman George Wilber, recognizes Mrs. Trowbridge for her 1989 gift of the land on which Town Hall resides—and the historic timbers which grace its interior. Town Hall opened in June 2003. Prior to that, it was the site of the Gray Barn, erected in 1842. The design of today’s Town Hall, and its interior, pay tribute to the historic barn which preceded it.

This weekend marks the end of the season for the Colebrook Town Pond with lifeguards on duty this Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

The Colebrook Associates food pantry, located in the vestibule of the Community & Senior Center, is open Monday-Thursday from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and Friday from 8:30 a.m.-noon. Donations may be left at the pantry or in the collection bin at the Post Office.

The summer series of Sunday evening Vesper Services and Hymn Sings continues Sunday evenings through September 6th, at 7 p.m. at the historic Church in the Wildwood on Route 183 in North Colebrook. Everyone is welcome.
