Town Hall will be closed Monday, September 7th, in observance of Labor Day. We will re-open Tuesday, September 8th, at 8:30 a.m.
Due to the holiday, next week’s trash pickup will be delayed one day. Thursday pickup will be on Friday, and Friday pickup will be on Saturday.
The 81st annual Colebrook Fair will take place on Saturday, September 5th, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Festivities include a Car & Motorcycle Show<colebrookfair.weebly.com/car–motorcycle-show.html> from 9 a.m.-2 p.m., Frog Jumping & Pet Show<colebrookfair.weebly.com/pet-show–frog-jumping-contest.html> (with registration at 9 a.m.), 30+ vendors, food and music. A schedule of events for the Fair is attached.
Colebrook Consolidated School Principal Will Wesley has volunteered to take the plunge in our dunk tank to benefit the school’s annual Nature’s Classroom trip. Mr. Wesley will be in the tank from 11:30 until noon.
A free shuttle bus will run between Town Hall and the Rock School from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday. From 1779 until 1911, the Rock School served Colebrook as one of our 11 one-room schoolhouses. Maintained by the Colebrook Historical Society, the facility is the only Colonial Era school in Connecticut that has never been modernized in any way.
The Colebrook Historical Society is also featuring a new display of artifacts at the Fair. Entry is through the Courtyard behind the building (adjacent to the Frog Jumping/Per Show area).
At 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, the Colebrook Fair Cardboard Regatta<colebrookfair.weebly.com/cardboard-boat-regatta.html> sets sail. The Regatta features homemade cardboard boats with winners for each race, and awards for “Funky-est” boat and best costume. Registration will take place from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Town Pond.
The Colebrook Recreation Cow Plop Raffle, sponsored by Pinney Stables, will be held from 1-3 p.m. during the Fair at the Colebrook Ball Field on Cooper Lane. Tickets can be purchased at Facebook.com/colebrookctfair Tickets are $20 with a cash prize of 20% of total ticket sales. Proceeds benefit Colebrook Recreation programs.
To accommodate our Fair guests, we will be temporarily re-locating the Town Hall composting station. Between September 4th and September 8th, the food scrap collection bin will be located at the southwest corner of the Colebrook Town Garage. On Tuesday, September 8th, it will return to Town Hall.
We are currently completing crack sealing of 8 town roads and will begin chip sealing in coming weeks. Details to come.
Crack sealing and chip sealing are important because they extend the life of roads and reduce long-term repair costs. Crack sealing fills and seals cracks in the pavement before water can enter. It prevents water from damaging the road’s foundation. Chip sealing applies a protective layer of asphalt binder and small aggregate stones to the road surface, extending the useful life of the pavement. Please be courteous to our Public Works team and contractors and proceed slowly through work zones. The town will begin accepting applications for energy assistance beginning Tuesday, September 15th. The summer series of Sunday evening Vesper Services and Hymn Sings concludes this Sunday at 7 p.m. at the historic Church in the Wildwood on Route 183 in North Colebrook. Everyone is welcome.
On Friday, September 25th, the Colebrook Historical Society will host its final Friday Night Gathering for 2026. The topic will be the Hartford Circus Fire. In 1944 one of the worst fire disasters in American history occurred in Hartford, Connecticut. This presentation by the Connecticut Museum of Culture & History will use photos and artifacts from their collection to help tell the stories of that day.
