Greetings from Colebrook Town Hall.
One hundred and nine Colebrook residents voted in this week’s Democratic Primary. This total included 37 early voters and represented a 41% turnout of registered Democrats. Results in Colebrook were as follows:
Gubernatorial Primary: Ned Lamont 76; Josh Elliott 30
First District Congressional Primary: Luke Bronin 47; John Larson 43; Ruth Fortune 10; Jillian Gilchrest 5
Both Governor Lamont and former Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin won their respective primaries and will be on the ballot in November. They will face Republican nominees Ryan Fazio (for Governor) and Amy Chai (for Congress).
Thank you to our Registrars of Voters, Town Clerk and all of our poll workers for their tireless efforts that led to a smooth election.
The Department of Public Works reports they will be crack sealing town roads the week of August 24th, with chip sealing to follow in the coming weeks. Details to come in next week’s newsletter.
Volunteers are needed for the 81st Colebrook Labor Day Fair, to be held on Saturday, September 5th. If you’re able to volunteer, please contact Karen at kodell@colebrooktownhall.org.
Cardboard and duct tape for Cardboard Regatta participants is available at Town Hall.
The Community & Senior Center is looking for volunteers to support its presence at the Fair. Although the requests for raw materials have been filled, they can still use pies and raffle baskets. What they especially need is volunteer time for setting up, working the fair and cleaning up. Breakfast is served at the Community & Senior Center every Tuesday from 8-9:15 a.m. for $6. Lunch is available Thursdays at noon for $7, except when an out-to-lunch event is scheduled (advance registration is required for lunch). Bingo is held every Tuesday from 1-3 p.m. Stay up to date with programming and events at the Center on Facebook.
The Colebrook Town Pond is open through the end of August with lifeguards on duty Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. The gates are open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with no lifeguard on duty.
Colebrook Recreation is sponsoring “Popsicle Thursdays” at the Town Pond every Thursday from 4-6 p.m. during August. Popsicles and fun will be provided by Colebrook Recreation. No lifeguard on duty. This is not a dropoff event. Children must be accompanied by an adult. See flyer attached.
The Colebrook Associates food pantry, located in the vestibule of the Community & Senior Center, is open Monday-Thursday from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and Friday from 8:30 a.m.-noon. Donations may be left at the pantry or in the collection bin at the Post Office. In need this week are baking mixes and breakfast items.
Upcoming events
The summer series of Sunday evening Vesper Services and Hymn Sings continues Sunday evenings through September 6th, at 7 p.m. at the historic Church in the Wildwood on Route 183 in North Colebrook. Everyone is welcome.
On Friday, August 21st, at 7 p.m., the Colebrook Historical Society presents, “Backpacking 8,000 miles on the Triple Crown Trails.” Colebrook Resident Ed Kostak has hiked the Appalachian and Pacific Coast trails. His presentation will focus on his most recent trek, the Continental Divide Trail. Learn more at the attached flyer.
Camp Jewell will be hosting their annual fireworks display for Camp Rising Sun on Monday, August 24th. This is an annual show, visible from various points around town. The rain date is Tuesday, August 25th.
